Learn from a Podcaster: Dan Delgado with “The Industry”

Dan Delgado with The Industry podcast

Hello! What’s your background and what’s your podcast about?

The Industry is a narrative podcast about forgotten movie history. It's episodic so you can jump in at any episode.

What motivated you to start a podcast?

I had been doing a radio show out of my apartment that I was able to get on a handful of public stations. It was a lot of fun, but when I started to hear shows like Radiolab, shows that had a high production, documentary style, I realized that was what I really wanted to do.

What went into starting the podcast?

I started with a six episode season that was extended into nine. I had made all six before I published the first one. Coming up with the topics for each one and securing interviews was the hardest part. It still is!

What podcast tools (equipment and software) do you use and what is your creation process?

Research and interviews lead the story. Sometimes the story grows or becomes something else the deeper you get into it. I use Descript to pull quotes from the interviews, I use a Zoom H4n to record my narration (in a closet of course!), and I edit it together using Hindenburg.

How have you attracted listeners and grown the podcast?

I had a few listeners from the radio show convert to the podcast. I'm pretty active on Twitter, but after the second season I was able to get a partnership with MovieMaker Magazine, which has definitely helped a lot. Basically it means they host the show and will put it on their website.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced and obstacles you’ve overcome?

The main reason I sought the MovieMaker affiliation was because I was having a hard time getting to certain guests. They didn't know who I was (why would they?) and since the interview, in some ways, drove the episodes, it was a problem. Being able to say I'm with MovieMaker has made that part a bit easier.

What are your goals for the future of your podcast?

The goal is always to make another episode. Maybe I should change that!

What’s your advice for new podcasters who are starting out?

Have a plan before you start, but don't overthink it. Listen to other podcasts. Have fun.

How can everyone learn more about you and your podcast?

You can check out The Industry at my website or you can get in touch with me on twitter (The podcast is @theinudstry13 and I'm @_dan_delgado).
