You know Malcolm Gladwell's “10,000-Hour Rule.” But did you know that, according to David Epstein, it doesn't work? That's what Epstein argues in his new book, “Range: Why Generalists Triumph In A Spe...Show More

This was a fascinating episode about specialist and generalists. When are specialists successful vs generalists? It depends on whether it's an wicked/open problem (i.e. starting a business) or a closed problem (i.e. chess, golf). Enjoyed the camaraderie, but also how Gladwell and Epstein debated eac...Show More

@lynnw This is the episode where Gladwell's 10k hour rule gets debunked.

@mm awesome! Definitely giving this one a listen. I learned about the 10k rule in my motor learning class and we also debunked it 😂 Apparently 10k hours isn’t needed for particular skills nor do we stop learning after the 10k hours. There’s lots of factors that go into mastery of a certain skill! ...Show More

@mo-to Is there an article or something about the debunk? I heard from the episode regarding "is psych in crisis?" that this was being debunked!
mootJun 23rd, 2021
@mm good question! I’m not sure if the 10,000 hours was a part of the “crisis” (I saw it somewhere too but forgot LOL) but I do know in general, the psych field can be pretty subjective depending on people’s perspectives! Bias I think. “How do we know what we are measuring?” kind of thing maybe? 😯

Very reassuring to a generalist like me. I strongly recommend since it takes in consideration the 10k hours rule*, in a way that is contextually relevant as an alternative more than a rule.

LOVED this episode. Listen if you think about becoming a specialist or generalist, or if you are contemplating what sports/extracurricular hobbies to put your kids in, or if you are interested in how masters become good at their craft (like golf stars, tennis stars) and whether Malcolm Gladwell’s 10...Show More

So many good ideas here. • spacing between learning sessions has a greater impact in retaining information than overwhelming yourself in one session. • generalists have an advantage after all when it doesn’t come to repetitive/process oriented learning The concept that we don’t really know what...Show More

David Epstein, the author of, “The Sports Gene”, has a wholesome discussion with Malcolm Gladwell, the guy behind the “10,000 Hour Rule”. Epstein discusses why success in life isn’t always based on hitting those 10,000 hours! Early specialization for kids can interfere with motivation and reduce the...Show More
