Roman Mars could read the back of a cereal box and I would listen. Very interesting story about the librarian who kept Goodnight Moon out of the NYPL.

LOVED this episode. I had heard that anecdote about how there was a librarian who banned Goodnight Moon from NY public libraries, but I knew nothing else beyond that. I really love that Anne Carroll Moore was dedicated to providing working class children the same leisure and learning experiences tha...Show More

And wow, the coda is really amazing. I told my husband that when he suggests something I don’t like, I’m going to start saying “Nicholas wouldn’t like that.” He was not a fan

@rmmiller364 it was the cab ride that got me. The minute they said there was an incident in a cab I knew what I would have done with that thing. I just laughed out loud.

A great story about libraries and children’s literature. Fascinating how much influence a single person can have both good and bad.

As a parent who has read this book to their kiddos, it was so interesting to hear the social context of this book and people who you wouldn’t imagine excluding it from libraries. Super recommended!

Wowza! Why wasn't one of the most famous children books, Goodnight Moon, in the NY Public Library system? Because the woman who invented the children's reading room didn't like it. Meet the Anna Wintour of children's book. Also the last epilogue bit was hilarious.

I have to side with the view that creating the concept of a children’s library and promoting childhood literacy is more important than the fact that she liked this genre of books over that genre. Tastes change over time, but love of reading is a lifelong gift to any child no matter what they choose...Show More

@phocks for your daughter do you have the Pigeon books by Mo Willems? (Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive A Bus, the Pigeon Eats a Hot Dog, don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late)? We loved those ones. They are fantastic read aloud books and a lot on of fun. Also Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann, How to Catch...Show More

@phocks I’m curious: did your child like Goodnight Moon? I was just ordering some board books as a baby gift for a friend with a newborn, and DD17 was looking over my shoulder. When she saw the cover for Goodnight Moon come up on the screen she said, “Oooh, I always HATED that one. It was so SAD!...Show More

@epekilis How strange that it produced that reaction. I guess different associations produce different emotions in different children. My daughter loves it!
