An interesting perspective on contrasting curiosity with passion as a way to live one’s life. I thought a lot about the metaphor of curiosity being a kinder, more accessible instinct as compared to passion that can be demanding and greedy and how we choose one over the other as a way to live life. I...Show More

Y’all. This speech changed my life. I literally thought I was broken because I could never stick to one single “passion.” I heard Liz’s jackhammer vs. hummingbird speech years ago and have been recommending it to everyone ever since. It made me feel whole.

@mm Please let me know what you think!! 🙏🏼 Realizing that I’m allowed to jump from “passion” to “passion” and that it actually helps me thrive as a person took off so much societal pressure I had put on myself!

@sjlinquist Yes! School and society funnel us into strict specialized roles, but there's so much more to living, life and work than just letting one thing define you. But I've always been jealous of people who are just so good at one thing that they knew that it's their calling in life since they we...Show More

@sjlinquist @mm Society makes us multipotentialites feel like we need to hunker down and specialize in order to succeed. Yes we are allowed to jump from passion to passion - and we don't need anybody's approval to do so. I stopped telling close-minded friends about my different projects because they...Show More

@sjlinquist Ok just listened to it. As someone who has a ton of passions and am curious about so many things, I definitely identified with the woman who locked herself in the room and wrote the letter. Elizabeth is *such* a great storyteller. She doesn’t skip a beat. I wanted so much to just lean ...Show More

@mm That’s a spectacular point! Thanks for bringing it up. Passion is absolutely a privilege, and something to find gratitude in if you can pursue yours (or even just have the opportunity to be curious and explore different options out there.)

Author of “Eat, Pray, Love” Elizabeth Gilbert rethinks her preaching on passion, because not everyone has one single passion that they drive towards fulfilling in their whole life. If you have many passions or don’t have any, then this speech might be the one you need to feel less alone in a society...Show More

She seems to have re-thought how she does her talks after that email from a fan. Amazing how small moments like that can have a big impact multiple people.

@cat Not sure if you listened to this but this was an interesting Oprah Super Soul episode with Liz Gilbert on her rethinking of “following your passions”. I had some thoughts about this that I expressed in the thread below👇
