Hi! I'm Mimi Young, a shamanic healer, neurofeedback practitioner, and founder of spirit medicine brand, Ceremonie and neurofeedback clinic, Open Minds Performance. I'm hosting an AMA (Ask Me Anything) about my interview with @jossbiggins on the ThinkSpace podcast. We talk about brainwaves, neurofee...Show More

@ceremonie Mimi I have SO many questions. First one: talk to me about the Montessori system and child/brain development. Are children who go through this system at a serious advantage over children who don’t? Have there been studies? I’m so curious.
kevinwongNov 30th, 2019
@ceremonie what do you think is the biggest area being missed when we look at our mental /brain performance?
alicekoNov 30th, 2019
@ceremonie question 2: what do you think of neurofeedback consumer wearables such as the Muse, Halo, etc?
shopceremonieNov 30th, 2019
@kevinwong Hi Kevin! Such an important question! Because I straddle both the scientific-physiological world as well as the spiritual world, my perspective is that spiritual wellness also needs to be considered when we are discussing brain performance or optimal living in general.

@aliceko Hey Alice! It’s difficult to quantify advantages and determine how a pedagogical system like Montessori will impact a child’s life outcome, as each child is unique and there are a variety other factors to consider such as socio-economics, for instance. With that said, many Montessori-educat...Show More

@aliceko Great question! I would put those two in the brain wave entrainment category rather than neurofeedback category. Entrainment is the process of interaction between independent rhythmical processes; in the case of Muse, the experience for the user is that their brain waves winds up adjusting ...Show More

@shopceremonie @kevinwong To expands on this - if someone inexperienced in with spirituality wanted to start incorporating this as a way to improve brain function what would you recommend? Meditation?

@shopceremonie In your opinion, should the public education system (North America, Europe etc) incorporate the Montessori method into their curriculum? Realistically, would they? Why or why not?
alicekoDec 1st, 2019
@shopceremonie Ok. Sounds like consumer entrainment tools are not as customized to the individual as neurofeedback is, is that correct?
shopceremonieDec 4th, 2019
@aliceko correct! 😊

@aliceko Within BC, Canada, they do! There is a sprinkling of Montessori programs at the elementary level within some public schools. Entry is usually via lottery. The interpretation and application of the method varies, and this is one barrier to scale, the other is cost of Montessori materials and...Show More

I’m a huge fan of your work, Mimi! Thank you for these insightful nuggets and the thoughtful discussion. What are some examples of some of the goals that your neurofeedback clients have set and what improvements have you seen after a couple sessions vs the completion of 10 sessions?

In the episode you mentioned that delta brain waves are where cellular re-generation happens. Other than sleep, are there any activities that can mimic the delta brain waves to further increase cellular re-generation?
jennslauDec 3rd, 2019
Does the quality of the specific brain waves matter? By quality I suppose it would be duration. What I’m understanding is that accessing your delta brain waves would be similar to getting your REM cycles in? Is there a sweet spot for each person? How we do find that?

Regarding shamanic journeying, much like a muscle can be overextended by working out too much, not honoring your body’s physical boundaries, not allowing yourself enough time to heal...is it possible to overextend in shamanic journeying?
alicekoDec 3rd, 2019
@jennslau Great question!!!!!
shopceremonieDec 4th, 2019
@jennslau Hi!! Love your questions! Common goals: • healthier emotional and professional boundaries • increase of resiliency, particularly with problem solving • decrease stress and increase of calmness and self confidence • increase of awareness and consciousness • increase focus and time ma...Show More

@jennslau As adults, delta (slow wave sleep) is accessed via sleep for adults, and will decline with age. Entrainment (read thread) can offer some support, and though there is no definitive agreement in research, some say alcohol and other substances can affect/diminish delta waves. Children 0-5 yea...Show More

@shopceremonie @jennslau Since listening to this episode, I’ve been super conscious about what I’m thinking about while waiting to fall asleep. I don’t want to think about anything too complex or work/life related, because I now know that will simulate beta waves and keep me up. So I’ve been trying ...Show More

@jennslau I am not a sleep expert, but REM is actually more associated with theta brain waves. And yes, quality sleep does equate to the duration of delta and theta waves. There are generalized sweet spots, but of course also depends on the individual, gender, and on your age. For instance, delta wa...Show More

@jennslau shamanic journeying isn’t a muscle. It’s a practise that involves entering into an altered state (I achieve this through drum beats and rattling; others may use entheogens), and I travel to spirit places. So is it possible to journey too much? Too much is relative, but I suppose one can. B...Show More

@mm Entrainment music can help! Other supports can include Holy Basil, a non-theogenic plant medicine that calms and supports the adrenals and is deeply relaxing (some studies suggest up to 8x more relaxing than lavender). I personally love working with it in a form of essential oil. 5-6 drops in 1/...Show More

@shopceremonie @jennslau Jen, great question about activities that can mimic the delta brain waves to further increase cellular re-generation, Mimi can you talk about Binaural Beats here, or is that not relevant?

@aliceko Binaural beats are a type of entrainment!

@jossbiggins My top 5 takeaways: 1. There is a difference between responding and reacting 2. We don’t need to learn grand new things (like learn a new language) to strengthen our brain. Small things (like taking a different route to work) can also improve brain function 3. We need a new term for w...Show More

Hey Mimi. Loved getting to know you even more on this podcast. Thank you for being so open and sharing so fully. @shopceremonie @monamok I can relate to this question. What kind of response do you suggest when people infer that you believe in is wacky or woo-woo? (eg. roll their eyes, say something like “that’s not real”, etc)
alicekoDec 1st, 2019
@shopceremonie @monamok I have another question! Do you find that the Asian-American/Canadian community has welcomed the type of work you’re doing
shopceremonieDec 4th, 2019
@aliceko that is the million dollar question! 😂 I think I’m beyond that though, especially since I now often tell people I’m a professional witch (cackle) ⚡️
shopceremonieDec 4th, 2019
@aliceko For me, I have found immense support by both westernized Asians and those who reside in Asia. It’s important to me that my “brand of spirituality” is welcoming and accessible to all, and that it isn’t a specific race or demographic that can relate or benefit from this work
alicekoDec 5th, 2019
@shopceremonie @monamok I’m curious what you recommend that others say though? For instance when people tell me what I believe in is not scientifically backed.
shopceremonieDec 5th, 2019
@aliceko I don’t think it’s about changing anyone’s mind, or to convince anyone. What I might say is that science is evolving all the time and that its one tool (the scientific method) can only and must only measure one variable at a time. This is a limitation. And to trust science alone is no diffe...Show More
